Follow The Directions

01

Step

Prepare the Brussels Sprouts: Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a rolling boil. Blanch the Brussels sprouts for 1-2 minutes until slightly tender. Immediately transfer to an ice bath to stop the cooking process. Drain well. (Time: 5 minutes)

02

Step

Sear the Sprouts: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Arrange the Brussels sprouts cut-side down in the hot oil. Season with red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Cook undisturbed until the cut sides are deeply browned, about 7-9 minutes. (Time: 10 minutes)

03

Step

Sauté Aromatics: Add the chopped red onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the Brussels sprouts are tender-crisp and the onions are softened, about 10-13 minutes. (Time: 15 minutes)

04

Step

Brown the Butter: In a separate light-colored saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. As the butter melts, it will begin to bubble and foam. Continue cooking, swirling the pan occasionally, until the butter turns a golden-brown color and emits a nutty aroma, approximately 5-10 minutes. Be careful not to burn it! (Time: 10 minutes)

05

Step

Combine and Serve: Remove the browned butter from the heat and immediately pour it over the Brussels sprouts in the skillet. Toss to coat evenly. Serve immediately, while warm.

For an even richer flavor, add a splash of balsamic vinegar to the skillet in the last minute of cooking.
To add some protein, consider tossing in toasted pecans or crumbled bacon.
Using a light-colored saucepan makes it easier to monitor the browning of the butter and prevent burning.
