For a deeper flavor, use dark brown sugar. If you don't have fresh ginger, 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger can be substituted, but the flavor won't be as vibrant. Marinating for longer than 2 hours can result in the salmon becoming too soft. This marinade also works well with other types of fish, such as tuna or swordfish, or even chicken breasts.
