For a sweeter salad, increase the sugar to 1.5 teaspoons.
If you don't have distilled white vinegar, apple cider vinegar can be used as a substitute. Start with 1/4 teaspoon and adjust to taste.
Consider using a mandoline for uniformly thin cucumber slices.
Red onion adds a more pungent flavor if you prefer.
This salad is best served fresh; the cucumbers will release water as they sit.
