For a spicier dish, use hot chorizo or add a pinch of red pepper flakes. If you don't have red wine, you can substitute with chicken broth. To thicken the sauce further, mix a tablespoon of cornstarch with two tablespoons of cold water and stir into the slow cooker during the last 30 minutes of cooking. This dish can be made ahead of time and reheated. The flavors actually improve overnight!
