For an extra touch of decadence, consider adding a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg to the egg mixture. If you don't have brioche or challah bread, any good-quality white bread will work. Just make sure it's sturdy enough to hold its shape when soaked. Feel free to experiment with other berries, such as blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries, in place of or in addition to the strawberries. The casserole can be assembled up to 24 hours in advance. Just be sure to keep it tightly covered in the refrigerator. If the top of the casserole starts to brown too quickly, you can loosely tent it with aluminum foil during the last 15-20 minutes of baking.
