For a richer flavor, use homemade chicken or vegetable stock instead of water. If you don't have fresh herbs, 1 teaspoon of dried parsley and 1/2 teaspoon of dried thyme can be substituted. To add a touch of heat, include a pinch of red pepper flakes during the simmering process.
