For a richer flavor, brown the butter before creaming it with the sugar. To prevent the cake layers from sticking, line the bottoms of the cake pans with parchment paper rounds. The Lady Baltimore Frosting can be made a day ahead and stored in the refrigerator. If you prefer a less sweet cake, reduce the amount of sugar in the batter by 1/4 cup.
