For a smoky flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon of smoked paprika to the sauce during the simmering process. Adjust the cayenne pepper to your preferred level of spiciness. A pinch of red pepper flakes can also be used. Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
