For a more complex flavor, add a pinch of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, or allspice during the last few minutes of cooking. Adjust the amount of sugar based on the sweetness of the apples used. Tart apples may require more sugar. Applesauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. For a richer flavor, substitute apple cider or apple juice for some of the water.
