For a smokier flavor, use smoked bacon. Add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the meat mixture for an extra kick. Make sure the vegetable mixture is completely cool before adding it to the meat to prevent cooking the egg. If you don't have buttermilk, you can use regular milk with a teaspoon of lemon juice or vinegar.
