For a richer flavor, try using Gruyere or Fontina cheese in addition to or in place of the Cheddar. Add a pinch of nutmeg to the cheese sauce for a warm, subtle spice. Feel free to experiment with different vegetables! Cauliflower, asparagus, or even Brussels sprouts would work well in this gratin. If you don't have stale bread, you can lightly toast fresh bread in the oven and then crush it into crumbs. Make sure to drain the broccoli very well after steaming to prevent a watery gratin.

May 8, 2025Easy to follow instructions and a crowd-pleasing dish. I added a dash of hot sauce to the cheese sauce for a little kick.

Apr 15, 2025This recipe is fantastic! My kids, who usually turn their noses up at broccoli, devoured it. The breadcrumb topping adds a wonderful crunch.

Apr 3, 2025The best broccoli gratin I've ever made! The key is not to overcook the broccoli during steaming.
