Follow The Directions

01

Step
3 mins

Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion and 1 teaspoon of the kosher salt, cook until softened (about 3 minutes). Add garlic and cook until fragrant (about 1 minute). Add ground sirloin and Italian sausage, breaking them up with a spoon, until browned (about 5 minutes). Stir in 3 cups of marinara sauce; bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and simmer while pasta cooks.

02

Step
5 mins

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a large casserole dish.

03

Step
1 mins

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add spaghetti and cook until al dente (about 7 minutes). Drain, return spaghetti to the pot, and stir in 3 1/2 tablespoons of butter and the remaining marinara sauce.

04

Step
7 mins

In a medium bowl, combine cottage cheese, cream cheese, sour cream, the remaining salt, pepper, and 1 cup of mozzarella cheese. Stir until well combined.

05

Step
2 mins

Add half of the pasta to the prepared casserole dish. Spread the cheese mixture evenly over the pasta. Add the remaining pasta. Slice the remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter into thin pats and arrange over the pasta. Top with the meat sauce mixture, the remaining 2 cups of mozzarella cheese, and the grated Parmesan cheese. Place the casserole dish on a rimmed baking sheet.

06

Step
3 mins

Bake in the preheated oven until the cheese is melted and browned and the pasta is bubbling around the edges (40-50 minutes). Let stand for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley, if desired.

For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a pinch of red pepper flakes to the meat sauce.
Ensure your cream cheese is fully softened for a smooth cheese mixture.
If you don't have cottage cheese, ricotta cheese makes a fine substitute.
To prevent the top from browning too quickly, tent the casserole dish with foil during the last 15 minutes of baking.
