In a mixing bowl, dissolve sugar and yeast in 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon warm water. Let stand until yeast softens and becomes foamy, about 5 minutes.
02 Step
Recipe View
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine bread flour and salt. Mix in 2 tablespoons melted butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Pour in the yeast mixture and knead with the dough hook until the dough is smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes.
03 Step
Recipe View
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, 1 to 1 ½ hours.
04 Step
Recipe View
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
05 Step
Recipe View
Gently deflate the dough and divide it into approximately 12 equal portions (about 2 ounces each). Roll each portion into a 7-inch long stick and arrange on the prepared baking sheet. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rise again until doubled in size, 1 to 1 ½ hours.
06 Step
Recipe View
Remove plastic wrap. Bake in the preheated oven until the breadsticks are golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes.
07 Step
Recipe View
Immediately brush each breadstick with the remaining 2 tablespoons melted butter and sprinkle with garlic salt. Serve warm.
For an even richer flavor, brush the baked breadsticks with garlic-infused butter instead of plain melted butter.
If you don't have bread flour, you can substitute all-purpose flour, but the breadsticks might not be quite as fluffy.
A stand mixer makes kneading easier, but you can also knead the dough by hand on a lightly floured surface for about 15 minutes.
