For a richer flavor, use brown butter instead of regular softened butter. If you can't find black walnuts, regular walnuts or pecans make a fine substitute. Be sure your buttermilk is at room temperature for best results. To prevent the cake layers from sticking, line the bottom of each pan with parchment paper rounds. The cake layers can be baked a day ahead, wrapped tightly, and stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
